Crete is the largest island (260km by 60km) of Greece and the fifth largest island in the Mediterranean Sea with around 650.000 inhabitants. The capital of Crete is Heraklion. Crete forms a significant part of the economy and cultural heritage of Greece. It was once the centre of the Minoan civilisation which is the earliest known civilisation in Europe. Tourism forms a huge part of the income of Crete although the island is one of the few Greek islands that can support itself independently without tourism. This is with agriculture/farming, processing-packaging and services.
